Shams ud-Din Iltutmish [a] (1192 – 30 April 1236) was the third Sultan of Delhi from 1211 to 1236. He was from the Mamluk dynasty, who ruled the former Ghurid territories in northern India. He was the first Muslim sovereign to rule from Delhi, and is thus considered the effective founder of the Delhi Sultanate. Shams ud-Din Iltutmish was among the most important rulers of the slave dynasty. He was the slave who rose and earned the position of Sultan based on sheer merit. He captured the throne in 1211 after he dethroned and murdered the incapable ruler Aram Shah. Shamshuddin Iltutmish was a powerful ruler of the Delhi Sultanate in India during the 13th century. He was the third Sultan of Delhi and is considered one of the greatest rulers of the time, due to his military conquests, administrative reforms, and cultural achievements. Iltutmish was the first Muslim ruler to rule from Delhi and that's why he was regarded as the effective founder of the Delhi Sultanate. He was also the first Sultan of India to be recognised by the Khalifa.
