On February 20, 1947, King George VI, on the advice of British PM Clement Attlee, appointed Lord Louis Mountbatten as India’s last Viceroy of India and gave him the responsibility of overseeing the transfer of power to India from Britain. Lord Mountbatten, a retired British statesman and cousin to Elizabeth II, was assassinated on 27 August 1979 off the coast of Mullaghmore, Ireland.
