On January 26th, 1950, the Constitution of India came into force. Article 370 set three broad frameworks. Article 370 was the constitutional provision that granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, while Article 35A was a legal provision that flowed from Article 370 and gave the state of Jammu and Kashmir the power to define who is a "permanent resident" of the state, and to confer special rights and privileges to these residents. Article 370 exempts J&K from the application of the Constitution of India (except Article 1 and Article 370 itself) and permits the state to draft its own Constitution.
