The word Aghori originates from the Sanskrit word Aghor, which means fearless. Apart from Shiva, Aghoris are also known to worship Kali, the fierce form of Shakti. Aghoris are practitioners of a highly esoteric and controversial tradition within Hinduism , often associated with intense rituals, meditation, and ascetic practices. The term “Aghori” literally means “not fearful,” referring to their fearless approach to life, death, and the supernatural. This article is presented as a conversation between a disciple and The Master and seeks to demystify who Aghoris are. Aghori are a Shaivite monastic order of sadhus who practice post-mortem rituals, cannibalism, and other taboo acts to transcend the cycle of birth and death. They are the only surviving sect derived from the Kāpālika tradition, a Tantric form of Shaivism that originated in Medieval India.
