Lipid-soluble thiamine derivatives were developed mainly in Japan for the treatment of beriberi . It was therefore surprising that sulbutiamine appeared to exert specific effects on brain function. Two nutrients that had no effect on mortality via supplementation were shown to be protective when taken in the form of food. But is it really about the nutrients?
