The aim of FLN is to ensure that children learn in a joyful manner through play, stories, rhymes, activities, local art, craft and music and develop strong foundations for lifelong learning. Foundational Literacy and Numeracy ( FLN ) refers to basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. Foundational literacy encompasses the ability to understand written texts, express thoughts coherently in writing, and critically analyze information. Considering the challenge of equipping every child with basic FLN skills, the Government of India has launched a national mission for FLN called the National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy (NIPUN BHARAT).
