Neeraj joined the Indian Army in 2016 as a Naib Subedar (a junior commissioned officer) in the 4 Rajputana Rifles, following gold-medal performances at the Junior World Championships and South Asian Games. He has been serving in the Territorial Army. Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra is honoured with the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army, recognising his sporting excellence and service to the nation. The Indian Army has conferred the honourary rank of Lieutenant Colonel on 2020 Tokyo Olympic Gold medallist javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra. This was notified in “The Gazette of India”, an official document of the Government of India.
