Point Nemo , also known as the Oceanic Pole of Inaccessibility, is the farthest point in the ocean from any landmass. In other words, it is the most remote and isolated spot on Earth, surrounded by vast stretches of open ocean in all directions. The name Point Nemo comes from the imagination of author Jules Verne. It pays tribute to the fictitious explorer from Verne’s 1871 novel 'Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea', Captain Nemo , who travelled through equally isolated and enigmatic areas. Verne selected the Latin word " nemo ," which means "no one" or "nobody."
