The question of ‘ who discovered India ?’ is in itself a complexity. The question focuses more on who discovered the sea route to India and enabled trading relations. Trading routes in the 1400s-1500s were considered a great opportunity for the Portugal Empire to grow. The merchants who brought in spices and precious metals from India were highly sought after by the Europeans. They wanted to know the source of these ‘exotic’ and wonderful items, so a crew led by the Portugal voyager ... Vasco da Gama, the sailor who found India , the first European to reach the Indian subcontinent by sea, sailed under the Portuguese flag and circled the southern tip of Africa to become the first European to do so. Vasco da Gama (circa 1469 to 1524) was a Portuguese navigator who, in 1497 to 9, sailed around the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa and arrived at Calicut (now Kozhikode) on the south-west coast of India . Vasco da Gama's first voyage to India (1497-1499) was a landmark in global exploration, commissioned by King Manuel I of Portugal to establish a direct sea route to India , bypassing traditional overland trade routes.
